As AI and LLMs become more integrated into our everyday life the interfaces and back ends of these tools will become more opaque and difficult to understand, much like the early dial up Internet was much easier to understand than the current more polished Internet we have today.
- Central to this class is the application of Chat-GPT into your everyday life. One of the main issues that I've run into working with these new tools is remembering to use them. When trying to get information I'm so used to my regular patterns of searching Google for the answer, reading multiple sites for information, and using my human brain to aggregate the information and use it to create a plan. By using Chat-GPT I can have the computer brain do almost all this work for me but I have to remember to use it. Too often I find myself consulting Chat-GPT for the answer to my question after I've already spent a bunch of time manually doing what I can get Chat-GPT to do.
- Example: I was attempting to fix a printer issue at work. I spent 30 minutes co,bing through the web interface and searching Google looking for some clues to fix and obscure error message with no luck. Then, giving up on finding the answer quickly myself, I snapped a picture of the side of the printer where it had the model information and snapped a picture of the error message that was displayed on the screen. I uploaded these pictures to Chat-GPT and asked: "I'm getting this error message with this printer. I've attached pictures of the side of the printer and the error message. Can you search the web and tell me how to fix this?" Within 30 seconds Chat-GPT printed out the correct answer. A couple minutes later I was able to fix the printer issue.
- Lesson: Remember to check with Chat-GPT first and then search the Internet manually only after I've run into a roadblock.

Why Chat-GPT:
Chat-GPT is, from my experience, the most complete and easiest to use LLM. This software is closed source and runs on hardware controlled by Open AI which means that it is fast and reliable but also should make you think about the security risks associated with uploading your data to their servers. There are free and alternate LLMs out there and there will be more as time continues.
